“What if I hadn’t signed that lease?”

He looked at me as if he still hoped one of those nonexistent what-ifs might open a road back for him.
But the judge had already read the final ruling.
The moment the gavel came down, ten years of marriage came to an official end.
When we stepped out of the courtroom, Claire was waiting in the corridor with her lawyer.
She handed Graham a civil complaint.
“You promised me thirty years of housing, and now Owen and I have nothing. You owe us damages.”
Eleanor rushed over and snatched the filing from her hands.
“If you weren’t so greedy, Graham would never have ended up like this!”
Claire let out a sharp laugh.
“Who was it that sent the silverware to Newport? At the housewarming party, who was it that had me call her Aunt Eleanor?”
“I pitied you!”
“You pitied a woman who could help your son keep up appearances. Now that it’s all blown up, you want to dump everything on me?”
Graham stood trapped between them, unable to say a word.
Richard was at the far end of the corridor. The moment he saw my lawyer taking out the deposition papers, he turned and walked away.
At last, they had begun questioning each other—who had been wrong first.
But the answer had already been there in the lease, the plaque, and every single transfer of funds.
I didn’t stop to listen.
My lawyer pushed open the courthouse doors for me.
The rain had eased.
“Next come the regulatory hearings,” she said. “Graham’s statement today will be added to the record.”
I opened my umbrella.
“Then leave it to the people whose job it is to deal with it.”
The arguing behind me was shut away by the heavy doors.
