He Priced Me At A Penny So I Married Another Chapter 04
The truck doors shut in their faces.
I sent the driver Aunt Carol’s address in Somerville. Everett’s rental car was parked by the curb.
When he got out, his sleeves were still rolled up. He came toward us, into the wind, and the first thing he saw was the torn corner of the quilt in my arms.
“Do you have a lot of luggage? The tickets are booked, but there’s still time to go back and get your things.”
His gaze dropped to my wrist, then lifted to Derek.
Derek let go of Tori and took half a step forward.
“Everett, this is just a family matter. I didn’t mean to drag you into it. Lydia gets a little hot-tempered. Sorry to make you come all this way.”
The elders in the Lawson family knew the Hales. They even sent one another holiday cards every year. Whenever Derek talked about Everett, he was always more polite than he was with anyone else.
Everett walked past him and steadied the dust bag that had slipped from my hands.
“I’m here to pick up Lydia.”
Tori was still holding up her phone, though her smile had gone stiff.
“We were just joking around. Lydia was the one rushing Derek about the wedding date a minute ago. Take her out for a bit if you want—just remember to bring her back.”
