Robert was officially placed under investigation for vehicular manslaughter and obstruction of justice. Overnight, the Bennetts’ carefully cultivated image as a model adoptive family collapsed. Every charity they worked with pulled their promotional photos.
Caleb and his family released a public statement severing all ties with the Bennetts.
All of this came to me in emails from my lawyer.
The superiority Paige had lived on for more than twenty years shattered completely. A doctor diagnosed her with acute stress disorder. She locked herself in her room, refused to speak to her adoptive parents, and spent her nights crying, screaming, and smashing things.
But Elaine’s first concern wasn’t Paige’s health.
She stood outside Paige’s door with a prepared statement, demanding that Paige vouch for Robert’s character to try and get the prosecutor to go easy on him.
Paige refused to sign.
