He Watched Me Freeze Now He Begs For My Return Chapter 31
When winter arrived again, I moved into my new apartment.
The living room was bigger, and the windows looked out over the river. My friends helped me carry in the last box. No one went through my things without asking. No one made a joke out of my exhaustion.
Someone asked, “Do you want the dining table by the window or near the kitchen?”
I pointed toward the window.
“There.”
Once the table was in place, they pulled out pizza and drinks and sat wherever they wanted.
There were no matching outfits, no staged family portraits, and no one asking me to prove I deserved to be there.
Sarah flew in from Denver carrying a box of gingerbread men.
She looked around with a grin. “So this Christmas, are you still going to watch the snow alone?”
“No.”
I took the box from her and stepped back from the doorway.
“Come in.”
After dinner, it started snowing.
My phone received one last email from my lawyer.
Elaine’s sentence was now in effect. Robert was still serving his. And Caleb’s violation of the no-contact order had been officially entered into the record. Every process that had required my cooperation was now complete.
At the end of the email, my lawyer wrote:
“If any of them ever try to contact you again, you can still seek protection at any time. But I hope you never need to.”
I replied with a simple thank you and moved the message to my archive.
Sarah didn’t ask about Denver.
She didn’t ask if I had finally forgiven anyone.
She just handed me a mug of hot cocoa and reminded me it was a little cold by the window.
I took it and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass.
The snow was coming down harder, the streetlights glowing in a long line through the white night. A few years ago, weather like this had made me think I was going to die in the mountains.
Now, it was warm behind the glass.
My own keys hung by the door, and at my dining table sat the people I had chosen for my life.
No one was telling me to surrender.
And I didn’t need to win for anyone anymore.
The game that had lasted twenty years was finally over.
Everything that came next would be decided by me.
Outside, the wind and snow still raged.
I turned and walked back toward the light and the laughter.
This time, my life was my own.
The End
