His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 13

His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 13

After Evan left, Linda and Mark stayed in Portland for another two weeks.

They came to my office building every day, but they never tried to stop me again.

One evening after work, it started to pour. Through the glass doors, I saw Mark standing across the street, holding an umbrella. Several times he stepped off the curb as if to cross, but each time he stopped himself, only watching as I got into a cab.

Linda left more than a dozen letters with the front desk.

I opened only the first one.

She wrote that while packing up the house in Atlanta, she had realized every photo album in the living room was filled with pictures of Jude, Cassidy, and the three of them as a family. I had planned Jude’s birthdays, attended his games, and lived in that house for years, yet there wasn’t a single photo of me in any of them.

At the end of the letter, she wrote the same sentence over and over.

*I’m sorry. We never really treated you like family.*

Later, my lawyer forwarded me a summary of the therapy records Mark had voluntarily provided to the court.

In his sessions, he admitted he had known all along that the “tests” were hurtful. But Cassidy controlled visitation with Jude, and he was afraid of offending her, so sacrificing me had always seemed like the easiest option.

Only after losing another grandchild, one he would never meet, did he understand that some wounds cannot be repaired with an apology.

A month later, they sold the house in Atlanta and had half the proceeds transferred into my lawyer’s trust account as compensation.

I signed the paperwork to refuse it and had my lawyer return the money in full.

What they owed me had never been about money.

The day they left Portland, I received one last message from Linda, sent from the airport.

*We won’t force you to come home anymore.*

A few seconds later, a second message came through.

*Wherever you go, that is your home.*

I didn’t reply.

When boarding was announced for my own flight on a business trip, I locked my screen and slipped my phone into my bag.

But I didn’t delete the messages.
