His 47 Seconds Of Silence Cost Him Everything Chapter 30

As the children’s rehabilitation garden neared completion, I received an unusual design invitation.

The client was a nonprofit that provides legal aid to stepmothers.

The moment I saw the name, I remembered what my lawyer had once mentioned.

Evan had sold our marital home and donated the money to this organization.

I sent back a polite refusal.

*Thank you for the interest, but due to a conflict of interest, I am unable to participate.*

The next day, the organization’s director called me personally.

“Ms. Hale, we understand your concerns. The review panel considered anonymous portfolios only. The board didn’t know the designer was you until after they had selected the proposal.”

“The funding came from Evan Reed.”

“The initial seed donation did, yes. But he has no role in managing the organization and no naming rights over the project.”

I was silent for a moment.

“Does he know you invited me?”

“No.”

“If I take this project, all communication must go through the organization only. No publicity may use my marital history, and this garden cannot be framed as part of his redemption.”

The answer came quickly. “That’s acceptable.”

“I want it in writing.”

“You’ll have it today.”

After I hung up, my boss asked, “Are you really going to take it?”

“I haven’t decided.”

That afternoon, I went to look at the site alone.
