His Fake Proposal Led Me To My Real Husband Chapter 19
The following autumn, I received a package.
There was no sender’s name. Inside the cardboard box were a thousand gold favor boxes, folded neatly and packed in rows.
At the bottom was a note.
It had only one sentence on it.
*This time I folded them. All one thousand. You don’t have to forgive me, but I finally dared to finish it.*
I closed the box and put it on the top shelf of the bookcase.
Julian stuck his head out from the kitchen and asked who had sent it.
“An old friend,” I said.
He didn’t ask anything else. He only said, “Beef tacos for dinner, okay?”
I said yes.
Natalie had finally found her courage.
She was just too late.
The box made me think of the third month after I was married. I’d been watching a lot of cooking videos and had just started learning my way around the kitchen.
That day, I’d spent two hours following a video on my phone, and finally set down a plate of maple-glazed ribs that were charred black.
Julian picked up a piece and chewed thoughtfully for a long time.
“An improvement. About thirty percent less salt than last week’s scrambled eggs.”
I tapped the back of his hand with my fork.
“Do you have to use statistics when you’re giving a compliment?”
He laughed and finished the entire plate of ribs, even the most burned pieces.
The next day, when I got home, there was a handwritten recipe notebook on the kitchen counter.
On the cover it said: *For Rebecca. No need to apologize if it fails.*Â
