His Fake Proposal Led Me To My Real Husband Chapter 38
“Otherwise, she’d have to admit the person who rejected her wasn’t you, and it wasn’t me. It was the way she handles things.”
She paused.
“Mason came to see me later.”
I didn’t ask what he’d said.
But Caroline continued anyway. “He didn’t ask me to restart the project. He only said that back then, chasing after me to attend those galas was the same as silently accepting Patricia’s contempt for you.”
“And then?”
“That was it.”
She looked out the window.
“Admitting something doesn’t mean the consequences disappear.”
What she said sounded a lot like what I’d said to Natalie.
I nodded.
“Right.”
After Caroline left, my mother came out of the storage room.
“Was that Caroline just now?”
“Yes.”
“The one Patricia used to want Mason to marry?”
“Yes.”
My mother was quiet for two seconds.
“She has good taste.”
I stared at her for a second, then burst out laughing.
She laughed, too.
Julian came over carrying the last stack of empty boxes.
“What are you two talking about?”
My mother said, “Nothing to do with you.”
He looked at me.
I took the boxes from his hands.
“She’s right. Nothing to do with you.”
He lifted an eyebrow but didn’t ask.
On the way home, the snow had stopped.
Julian asked, “Is everything over now?”
“More or less.”
“What does ‘more or less’ mean?”
“There’s still Patricia’s public correction.”
“You think she’ll do it?”
“She will.”
“Why?”
I unlocked my phone.
My lawyer had just sent me a message.
After reading Natalie’s full statement and watching the unedited video, Patricia had agreed to sign.
She still refused to say the words “I’m sorry.”
But she admitted the fake proposal had happened and that she had publicly humiliated me without knowing all the facts.
That was enough.
I locked the screen again.
“Because she finally understands that silence doesn’t make evidence disappear.”Â
