His Lesson Killed My Mother Now He Will Pay Chapter 42
A week later, the Last Ride night hotline rang.
The girl on the other end was crying so hard she could barely breathe. Her father urgently needed to be transferred to another hospital, but an accessible transport service had refused him because of a past due bill.
“Do I have to prove he’s really sick?” she choked out. “Are you going to think I’m using you?”
The operator looked at me.
I had once asked those same two questions.
The difference was that back then, no one had been there to catch me.
I took the phone.
“Tell me the hospital, the room number, the wheelchair model, and the destination address.”
She gave me the information, then asked anxiously, “You won’t suddenly cancel, will you?”
“No. Right now, all you need to do is stay with him.”
I signaled the dispatcher to send a vehicle and forwarded a payment guarantee to the transport provider.
Four minutes later, the guarantee was in place, and a van with a lift platform rolled out of the garage.
The red distress marker on our dispatch screen turned green.
The money that made it possible had not come from gentle places.
Some of it came from an auctioned engagement ring. Some from the compensation paid after Sloane’s apartment was sold. Some from the unsigned transfers that Graham and Vivian still made.
I never washed clean where any of it came from.
I only gave it a new purpose.
That money had once been used to create cries for help.
It had once been used to ignore them.
Now, it was used for one thing only—to make sure help was always heard.
