His Lesson Killed My Mother Now He Will Pay Chapter 45
On my mother’s birthday, Aisha brought two lemon bars to the office.
She didn’t pass along a message from anyone. She didn’t ask if the other one should be saved. She just handed one to me.
“Would you let me take you to dinner tonight?”
She asked it seriously, not like it was a test.
“Yes.” I took the dessert from her. “But I’m choosing the restaurant.”
“Deal.”
When work ended, she didn’t hold the door for me or reach for my bag. She just stood at the bottom of the steps and waited while I locked up.
Three years later, Last Ride opened its second service center.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the big screen showed no footage of my story. It only scrolled through the yearly rescue numbers before settling on one line:
*Privacy protection period: permanent.*
I placed my mother’s photo at the center of the display. Aisha stood beside me.
Vivian came, too, wearing the necklace my mother had left behind.
Just before she left, she said suddenly, “The way you said ‘okay’ to Graham sounds a lot like this.”
“When I say ‘okay,’ it means I respect that you’ve already made a decision.” I looked at her. “When he said ‘okay,’ he was waiting for you to change yours.”
Vivian was silent for a moment, then nodded.
“I accept that distinction.”
After that day, she never came again.
The fund account received only one final anonymous donation.
