Garrett moving back didn’t change my life.
After work, I ate alone, watched TV dramas, and sometimes did aerobics along with whatever was on the screen.
That night, a live comment thread on social media had me laughing out loud.
Then a coworker called.
“Bulldozer wants everyone back in the office. Urgent.”
Our department head was Dana Bullock. She was notoriously hard-charging, so we all called her Bulldozer behind her back.
“There’s a problem with the department data. I’m already here. She’s furious.”
I immediately turned off the TV and went to change.
Just then, a text came in from Ryan.
[Laura, are you home?]
I told him I was on my way to the office.
He called almost immediately.
“Garrett’s having severe stomach pain. He’s at the hospital. Can you come?”
“At least bring him a change of clothes.”
I agreed.
“Send me the address.”
I packed a bag with some clothes and toiletries.
When I opened the front door, Vanessa was standing outside.
She spoke politely. “Garrett’s been admitted to the hospital. I came to get some clothes for him.”
