His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 39

His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 39

A year later, Salt Lake City had its first heavy snow again.

The office let out early, and my coworkers wanted to go to a fondue restaurant.

I made a point of sitting far from the service aisle and the heating station.

Megan laughed at me.

“You get burned once, and now you’re scared of every pot of soup in sight.”

I touched my back without thinking.

The burn marks had faded until they were almost invisible.

Some wounds really do heal.

They just need time.

After dinner, we walked out of the mall. Snow was falling outside.

Ethan stood at the curb, holding an umbrella.

Megan quickly dragged the others away.

I looked at him.

“Aren’t you supposed to be on a business trip?”

“Just got back.”

He tilted the umbrella slightly in my direction.

“I brought you a gift.”

It was an ordinary fridge magnet with the local skyline printed on it.

Over the past year, he had brought me one from every place he visited—no jewelry, no implied demands.

There were already seven or eight of them on my fridge.

I took it.

“Thank you.”

Ethan walked me to the entrance of my building.

“Lulu.”

I looked up.

His eyes were still gentle.

“Can I ask you a question now?”

This time, I didn’t avoid it.

“Go ahead.”

“Would you go on one date with me?”

“This isn’t a replacement for your last relationship, and I’m not asking for any promises.”

“Just dinner.”

I watched the snow drifting at the edge of the umbrella.

A long time ago, I had turned him down.

Back then, I had just gotten divorced, and any kind of closeness felt like another burden.

Even now, I still didn’t know if I would ever fall in love with Ethan.
