His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 41
Ethan and I didn’t go to an expensive restaurant for our first date.
We ordered the chicken soup and sandwiches we used to eat at a little diner near our high school.
The place hadn’t changed, but the owner didn’t remember us.
Ethan asked, “Why did you have a crush on me in high school?”
I took a sip of soup.
“Because you were good-looking.”
He raised a brow.
“That’s it?”
“And you got good grades.”
“What else?”
I thought for a long time.
“You were good at basketball, too.”
He leaned back in his chair.
“That sounds pretty shallow.”
I fought back a smile.
“Then why did you like me?”
Ethan looked at me.
“I forgot.”
“I’ve liked you for so long I can’t even find the first day anymore.”
My heart beat a little faster.
But I didn’t have that tight, constant fear I’d always had with Garrett—the fear of losing him.
After dinner, we walked along the street outside the school.
Ethan didn’t take my hand.
When we got back to the car, he opened the passenger door for me.
“Can I ask you out again?”
I nodded.
“Depends on your performance.”
He laughed.
“Okay.”
This wasn’t some fairy-tale ending.
I didn’t forget pain because of another person, and I didn’t hand my future over to him.
We were just two people willing to take one more step forward from a place that felt comfortable.
