His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 03
I barely slept that night and woke up late the next morning.
When I came into the kitchen after my shower, he had already made breakfast.
On the table were my favorites: sourdough French toast and bacon.
He was still wearing an apron, a spatula in his hand.
“Lottie, come try this. Tell me if I’m getting rusty.”
Before he got famous, there were times he would go months without landing a role. For two years, I paid all our bills.
He did the laundry, the cleaning, the cooking. There wasn’t a household chore he couldn’t handle.
Once, I joked, “You could just be a house husband. I wouldn’t mind supporting you.”
He shook his head, his expression serious.
“If I did that, your family would never believe I could give you a stable life. I want to be a man who deserves to stand beside you.”
Later, he climbed his way up from bit parts with no lines all the way to the awards stage.
His team worried that marriage would hurt his image, so we never went public. But everyone in the industry knew we were married in all but name.
I believe he meant those words when he said them.
And now, so was his betrayal.
The moment I heard him say “come try this,” I thought of the voice on the phone. I set down my fork.
He saw my expression and came over at once.
“What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well? I can take you to the doctor.”
His concern looked so real. I was about to speak when his phone rang.
It was the same ringtone I had heard the night before.
He half-turned away from me, answering on the first ring.
I couldn’t make out what the person on the other end was saying. He held the phone to his ear, hesitating for a moment.
A few seconds later, he looked back at me.
“Lottie, I’m sorry. The studio just scheduled a last-minute promo event. I might have to…”
“It’s fine,” I said. “Go.”
Don’t keep Madison waiting.
My divorce attorney was waiting for me anyway.
