His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 10
I made sure Parker paid for the damages. As soon as the money hit my account, I transferred it to Austin.
His car was still drivable. He took it to a body shop he trusted, and I called a car to take me home from there.
“I’m sorry,” I said while we waited. “About your car, and for dragging you into my divorce.”
He glanced at the dent in the rear bumper.
“I have other cars. This won’t impact my life.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I just offered a small smile.
My phone buzzed, alerting me that my driver was close.
“My ride’s here. I should go.”
As I turned, he stopped me.
“Charlotte, do you ever regret not choosing me back in college?”
I paused.
“No.”
No matter what Parker had become, back then, he really had loved only me.
If I had chosen Austin, every time I saw that 8, I would have wondered about his past.
I would have checked his phone, doubted him every time he came home late, and picked fights over a history that could never be changed.
That was never the right life for either of us.
Austin gave a wry, bitter smile.
“I understand.”
A moment later, he pulled out his phone again.
“We can at least be friends. Give me your number.”
We exchanged contacts.
As I walked toward the car waiting at the curb, he asked one last question. “If I hadn’t slept with so many people before we met, would things have turned out differently?”
A truck rumbled past, its engine drowning out my quiet reply.
“But that didn’t happen.”
