His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 18
That afternoon, I was in a meeting at work when my phone began vibrating nonstop.
It was the property manager from my mother’s community. She’d lost consciousness and had been taken to the hospital by ambulance.
My legs nearly gave out. I grabbed the edge of the conference table to keep myself from falling.
By the time I reached the hospital, the ER doctors were still working on her.
A neighbor told me a young woman had come to the door, said a few things, and my mother had clutched her chest and collapsed.
I didn’t need to ask for a name.
My hands were ice-cold. I regretted not taking stronger legal action sooner.
But all that mattered now was whether my mother would survive.
The wait felt endless.
When the doctor finally came out, I practically ran to him.
He said she had been brought in quickly enough that she was out of immediate danger, but she needed to stay for observation.
I leaned against the wall, my body finally sagging with relief. I thanked the doctor and the neighbor, then went to sit by my mother’s bed.
Her face looked so much older than it had that morning. My tears finally fell.
I thought of the eighth grade, of my father’s affair coming to light. My mother had lain in a hospital bed then, too, pale and breathing weakly.
I had put her in danger once. Now, it had happened again.
I stayed by her bedside all night.
The next day, before my mother had even woken up, Parker finally showed up.
His clothes were wrinkled, and he was out of breath.
“Lottie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know Madison would go to your mother.”
