His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 24

The last few pages were Victor’s messages to me.

I had only ever looked at each piece of evidence separately.

But laid out together, they formed a clear, damning timeline.

First, convince strangers that a woman is at fault. Then, publish her workplace and her family’s address. When she finally seeks help, warn her not to damage the reputation of the more famous person involved.

No one had to give the order to attack her.

Everyone just had to understand who was to be protected, and who could be sacrificed.

My mother finished reading the pitch memo and took off her glasses.

“Are you worried about me?”

“After the story runs, people might start talking about that hospitalization again.”

“I’ve already been in the hospital twice because of men,” she said. “The first time for your father, the second for Madison. Both times, we were told to keep quiet.”

She pushed the file back toward me.

“Keeping quiet didn’t protect me.”

The next day, I submitted a written conflict-of-interest disclosure to my editor.

I asked for only one condition.

The story could not mention my pregnancy or the termination. That was my private medical information, and it wasn’t a fact necessary to prove the online attacks.

My editor agreed.

As I started organizing a list of potential interview subjects, a new email arrived in my work inbox.

The sender was my father.

We had not spoken in years.

The subject line was only five words.
