His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 38

The body of the email contained no request to meet and no mention of the family’s reputation.

He said he finally understood that for years, he had treated financial support as grounds for forgiveness.

After reading it, I moved the email to my archive folder.

I did not reply.

Accepting that someone has finally said the right thing doesn’t mean you have to let them back into your life.

My reporting later won a journalism award.

At the ceremony, Professor Hart was sitting in the audience.

The organizers wanted to introduce me by talking about my journey from a celebrity’s wife back to being a reporter. I declined that introduction.

“I was always a reporter,” I said from the stage. “There were just five years in the middle when I put my skills to work in service of someone else’s career.”

The room was very quiet.

“And this series is not a woman’s revenge on her ex-husband. It stands on its own because it is built on police reports, court documents, video footage, and named, on-the-record responses from those involved.”

I paused.

“When someone says she is being harmed, of course we should verify the facts. But verification should not become a demand that she first prove herself flawless.”

As applause filled the room, I saw my mother stand up.

She looked healthy and happy.

Her doctor had cleared her for long-distance travel, asking only that she take her medication on time and avoid overexertion.

After the ceremony, she held the award in her hands for a long time.

“Can this go on the plane?”

“Why would you bring it to Italy?”

“I want to take a picture of it in Rome.”

“It’ll add weight to the luggage.”

“Then you can bring one less pair of shoes.”

I laughed and agreed.

We planned our trip for October.

The day before we left, I received one final message from Parker.

*I’ve read that article many times. You were right.*

There was no request after it, and no further apology.

I didn’t reply. I just deleted the conversation.

This time, I didn’t block his number.

Not because I was still waiting for something.

But because it no longer had any power over me.
