That night, Joseph didn’t sleep a wink.
The moment dawn broke, he grabbed his phone and dialed Perla’s number.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
He froze, then dialed again.
The same cold, automated recording met his ear.
He opened WhatsApp and typed a message: “Perla, I need to talk to you.”
The message failed to send.
He had been blocked.
Joseph’s hand shook as he gripped the phone.
Bethany woke up and saw him sitting on the edge of the bed, his face a haunting shade of white.
“What’s wrong?” She sat up, concern etching her features. “Did you have another nightmare?”
Joseph turned to look at her, his eyes bloodshot and raw.
“Beth…” His voice was so raspy it was barely audible. “I… I remembered some things.”
Bethany paused. “What things?”
He opened his mouth, but the words felt too heavy to carry.
Finally, he laid it all bare — everything from his past life.
Joseph closed his eyes, his voice trembling with desperation. “Beth, help me… please, help me get in touch with her.”
Bethany shook her head. “I won’t do that.”
“I’m begging you.”
“Joseph.” Bethany looked at him, her gaze unsettlingly calm. “You have no right to beg me. And you certainly have no right to ask anything of her.”
“She died of an illness in that life. She died all alone in a rented room.
“The last thing she ever heard was you telling her, ‘Your love makes me sick.'”
Joseph’s face turned ashen. For a moment, he couldn’t say a single word.
“I won’t help you contact her,” Bethany continued. “If you want to apologize, find your own way. But whether she forgives you or not… that’s her choice.”
That night, Joseph dialed Perla’s old number countless times, but it remained a dead end.
He searched for any trace of her contact info like a madman but found nothing.
Eventually, he pleaded with Bethany to pass on his apology.
After a long silence, Bethany finally sent a message to Perla: “Perla, Joseph remembered everything from the previous life, and he told me the whole story. He wants to apologize to you.”
After a long while, Perla replied.
Her response was tersely succinct. “I don’t hate him. But I will never forgive him, and I will never look back.”
Bethany showed the message to Joseph.
He read those words, over and over, syllable by syllable.
Then he began to laugh. He laughed until tears rolled down his face.
