The door was eventually forced open.
When the doctor approached, Silas fought violently.
“Get out!”
“I want Nora! Bring her back!”
In the end, Mrs. Grey tearfully allowed the doctor to sedate him.
Late that night, Silas woke from his drugged sleep and instinctively called,
“Nora.”
No answer.
Only Mrs. Grey sat beside his bed, her eyes red.
“Where is she?”
Silas struggled upright.
“Did she come back?”
Mrs. Grey painfully shook her head.
“Nora really left.”
“I asked someone at the university. She enrolled in the University of Edinburgh’s two-year master’s program in creative writing.”
“She probably won’t be coming back anytime soon.”
Silas stared blankly for a long time.
Then he threw off the covers.
“I’m going to find her.”
His legs had no strength.
The moment his feet touched the floor, he collapsed to his knees.
Mrs. Grey hurried to support him.
“You can’t go now.”
“Your physical and emotional condition can’t handle a long flight. And even if you went, she might not agree to see you.”
Silas froze.
Mrs. Grey looked at his thin, pale face.
Finally, she asked the question that had been weighing on her.
“Silas, tell me what really happened with that engagement.”
After a long silence, he lowered his head.
“I made her angry.”
“I didn’t know how to make it up to her.”
“Serena said if I got engaged to her, Nora would get jealous and come back to me.”
“I thought… she would never leave me.”
His voice trembled by the end.
“Mom, did I mess everything up?”
Mrs. Grey closed her eyes.
Tears slipped silently down her cheeks.
“Nora has already forgiven you more times than anyone should have.”
“She stayed with you for ten years. No matter how much she suffered, she never complained.”
“You didn’t appreciate her. And we failed to teach you how to treat someone you love.”
“You can’t keep hurting someone just because you know she loves you.”
Silas gripped the blanket.
Tears fell soundlessly.
“I’ll change.”
“I’ll apologize to her.”
“If she comes back, I’ll change anything she wants.”
Mrs. Grey gently patted his back.
“Listen to the doctors first. Get yourself stable.”
“When both you and Nora have had time to calm down, you can try talking to her.”
“As for Serena, if you don’t love her, we’ll make that clear.”
“You caused this mess, so the Grey family will take responsibility for any losses.”
Silas immediately looked up.
“I don’t love her.”
“I never wanted to marry her.”
A few days later, both families met to discuss formally ending the engagement.
Serena’s parents were furious.
“What kind of family does this?”
“You threw an engagement party and told every relative and friend we have. Now you’re saying it was fake? How is Serena supposed to face anyone after this?”
Mrs. Grey remained cold.
“Silas was wrong. The Grey family will cover every financial loss.”
“We’ll also make a public statement saying we canceled the engagement unilaterally so Serena’s reputation isn’t damaged.”
“But Silas wasn’t the one who suggested this fake engagement.”
“If you want to know who convinced him, ask your daughter.”
Serena went pale.
Her mother immediately defended her.
“Serena would never do something like that! She has always been accomplished and sensible. Do you know how many people want her?”
“Besides, didn’t Silas depend on Serena more than anyone when they were young?”
Mrs. Grey glanced at Silas sitting in the corner.
“Dependence is dependence. Love is love.”
“He depended on Serena because she was familiar to him. That doesn’t mean he wanted to marry her.”
“And the Grey family doesn’t appreciate being manipulated.”
“A person’s worth isn’t measured only by a résumé or accomplishments.”
“Character matters more.”
All color disappeared from Serena’s lips.
Silas never looked at her once.
It was as though the woman who had nearly become his fiancée had nothing to do with him.
