I Knelt For Three Years For A Lie. Now I’m Back For Blood Chapter 03

The price.

I looked at him. He looked so clean. So rested.

He’d spent a thousand days in a bed while I’d slept in ditches.

“Fine. Drive to the station. Tell them you’re a liar and you stole three years of my life. That’s the price.”

The fake kindness in his eyes snapped shut.

“Why do you have to be so unreasonable?”

“We have a life here. Careers. Leo is starting school. What do you gain by burning it all down?”

Jenna started to sob. That soft, breathless sound that always made people want to save her.

She reached out, but her fingers stopped an inch from the sores on my wrist.

“Mia, please. Think about our friendship.”

“I never meant to fall for him. But you can’t control who you love.”

“Marcus sacrificed everything for us. Why can’t you just be the bigger person?”

I looked at her trembling lip and felt like I was going to vomit.

Three years ago, she used this exact face.

She told me she was pregnant, crying like it was her execution.

She promised she’d leave. She promised I’d have my life back.

Instead, she chose a cliff.

The perfect play to make sure I’d never have a moment of peace again.

I yanked my hand back. Jenna hit the door with a thud.

The kid started to wail. The sound went through my skull like a needle.

“Mia, what the hell is wrong with you!”

Marcus slammed the brakes. The tires screamed. He whipped around, looking at me like I was the monster.

“She’s trying to reach out to you, and you’re still trying to hurt her?”

“You’re full of nothing but poison. Is this what three years of ‘atoning’ did to you?”

He handed her a tissue. The way he touched her arm made my stomach turn.

“Are you okay? Did she hit you?”

I just smirked. It was the only thing I had left.

“Marcus, what was your cut?”

My voice was flat. Empty.

“You let the whole world think you knocked up your sister’s best friend.”

“Just so they could play house while I crawled in the dirt? Did you sell me for a front-row seat?”

The car went dead silent.

His knuckles went white on the wheel. He shifted back into drive without a word.

We stopped in front of a two-story house.

The lawn was perfect. The flowers were watered.

A wonderful life built on every drop of blood I’d spilled.

Owen ushered Jenna and the kid inside, shielding them as if I were contagious.

Marcus stayed behind, watching me in the mirror.

“Get out. Don’t make me drag you.”

I didn’t move. My body felt like lead.

“Give me my phone and my ID.”

Marcus let out a short, breathy laugh. Like I was a mental patient.

“What for? So you can call the cops and get hauled off to a psych ward?”

He leaned back, studying me like a broken tool.

“You’ve been gone for three years, Mia. Your accounts are closed. Your ID is expired. You don’t exist.”

“You’re a ghost. You have nowhere else to go. So get inside and try to act like a human being.”
