She sent several letters after that. Sometimes she called me cruel. Sometimes she demanded I look after her daughters.
I never opened them.
Her three girls passed First Light’s independent review.
The project team helped transfer them to new schools and paid for tutoring and counseling. The money came from the foundation. They would never need to know me or thank me.
Carol found an administrative job and raised her three granddaughters alone. She stopped expecting anyone else to take responsibility for Taylor.
Life in prison for Derek and that obsessed fan wasn’t as peaceful as I might have once imagined.
The first time they talked about Taylor in the common area, they got into an argument.
Derek said Taylor was just some girl he had thrown away.
The other man insisted Derek was the one who had ruined Taylor’s life.
One had trapped her at home with pregnancy and violence while she was still a teenager.
The other claimed to love her, yet had been willing to take up a knife and kill for her.Â
