I Lost Our Child Chapter 12

The next day, I went to work.

Word had already spread that Ava had attempted suicide again the night of our interview.

I heard she was still in the ICU.

The whole office was talking about it.

“Why did she try again?”

“Seriously. She’d just done the interview that day.”

…

At lunch, an uninvited guest showed up at the office.

I had just finished eating and was heading back when a woman stopped me.

She was impeccably dressed, carrying a Hermès bag.

“You’re Alessa, right? Can we talk?”

I didn’t know her. I thought it was strange and was about to brush her off.

Until she said, “I’m Ava’s mother.”

That made me stop.

In that case, I did want to hear what she had to say.

She took me to a nearby café.

She ordered a latte.

Then she looked at me and said, “Ava and Thatcher grew up together.”

“They understand each other better than anyone.”

“If Ava hadn’t been young and foolish and gone to London, it never would have been your turn. They might have been married by now.”

She was even trying to blame me.

I asked, “What exactly are you trying to say?”

She was direct.

“Divorce Thatcher.”

“Both our families have always thought they were the perfect match.”

The contempt in her eyes was obvious. She took a sip of coffee and continued, “You two aren’t suited for each other. A divorce would be better for everyone.”

I smiled.

“Ma’am, this is the first time I’ve seen a mother so supportive of her daughter wrecking someone else’s marriage.”

“The problem here is that Thatcher won’t divorce me. You should go persuade him.”

“As long as he agrees, I’ll have to thank you.”

“Because even though interfering in someone’s marriage is an ugly business, I honestly do want to divorce him.”

Her face flushed with anger.
