I Lost Our Child Chapter 28
After returning to my hometown, I officially took over an investigative program.
It was called *After the Truth*.
The topic of the first episode was the same corrupt factory Sarah and I had investigated before.
After our report came out, the factory had been shut down.
But what happened afterward to the workers who had been denied wages, to the people who got sick from the working conditions—hardly anyone had gone back to ask.
I took a new team back to New Jersey.
The manager who had shoved me was long gone.
Standing at the gate of the old factory, the faded scar on my temple suddenly itched.
The intern looked at me with concern.
“Director Alessa, are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
I adjusted my hard hat.
“Let’s go in.”
The interviews lasted a week.
We cross-checked the old police records, the original reports, and the workers’ names.
We worked late every day.
No one here knew I had once been injured on this spot.
And no one cared whose ex-wife I was.
To them, I was only Reporter Alessa.
After the program aired, proper follow-up arrangements were finally made for those workers.
At the station meeting, the entire team was commended.
When management announced that the program would be renewed for the next quarter, the office broke into cheers.
I laughed along with them.
