I Lost Our Child Chapter 35
In the spring of the following year, I was promoted to department director.
The day the appointment came through, the office was even more excited than I was.
The interns bought a cake.
Sarah made a special trip from New York, and the moment she walked in, she gave me a huge hug.
“Director Alessa, you’re treating us tonight.”
“Absolutely.”
I agreed at once.
My phone lit up.
It was a number I hadn’t heard from in a very long time.
Thatcher had sent only three words.
[Congratulations. Take care.]
I looked at it for a moment and didn’t reply.
Not because I was still angry, and not because I was trying to be cold.
There was simply nothing left for us to say.
I turned off my phone and went back to cut the cake with my coworkers.
The sunlight outside was beautiful.
On the table lay the topic list for the next episode.
The next interview location was far away. We’d have to take a train for more than ten hours.
My mother had heard about it the night before and said the same thing she always did.
“Be careful on the road.”
I smiled and promised her I would.
On the day I left, I stood on the platform and watched the train slowly pull in.
The wind blew in from far away.
I picked up my luggage and walked forward with my team.
How I walk the road ahead is up to me.
The End
