I turned around and went back to my room.
Sloane had sent me a message.
Already on my way. One hour out.
One more hour.
Then I would leave.
I opened my suitcase on the floor and began packing one thing after another.
Everything Ethan had given me over the years went into a trash bag.
The vintage watch I had originally bought for Zoe went into my suitcase.
She didn’t deserve it.
I dragged my luggage outside. The birthday celebration still wasn’t over.
Gifts were piled in front of Zoe, and Ethan was helping her cut the cake.
When everyone saw me come out with a suitcase, they froze.
Ethan frowned first.
“What are you doing?”
“Sloane is coming to get me. I’m not staying here.”
My mother stared at me.
“Isn’t she vacationing on a nearby island?”
My father frowned too.
“You still have a fever. Why are you running around?”
“I can see a doctor at her place too.”
I kept walking.
Ethan stepped directly in front of me.
“Nora, I already explained what happened yesterday.”
I gave a small laugh.
“Then why did you say last night that you still haven’t gotten over her?”
“You also said that before marrying me, you had to make sure she was settled before you could stop worrying.”
His voice sharpened immediately.
“You were eavesdropping on us?”
“Yes. And I heard plenty.”
I looked at Zoe.
“Like why you became my friend in the first place.”
Her face slowly went pale.
“Ethan said that if you hadn’t met me, how would you have gotten into this circle?”
“Because I considered you my friend, I was willing to take you to events and introduce you to people I knew.”
“But even without me, he’ll keep taking you to dinners and charity galas.”
I suddenly smiled.
“Turns out I’ve been pretty useful all these years.”
“Nora!” Ethan finally sounded panicked. “I was only trying to help her.”
Julian hurried over too.
“Nora, Ethan only hid it because he was afraid knowing would make you uncomfortable.”
“And Zoe really did get where she is on her own. Ethan just helped here and there.”
I looked at him.
“You helped plenty too, didn’t you?”
He immediately fell silent.
My mother saw the atmosphere growing more strained and came over to pull me back.
“That’s enough, Nora. Everything’s out in the open now. You’re sick. Go back to your room and rest.”
I pulled my hand away.
My father’s expression darkened.
“What are you making such a fuss about? Zoe has ability but lacks opportunities. There’s nothing wrong with everyone giving her a hand.”
“You’ve never lacked anything in your life. There’s no need to be so petty about this.”
Ethan’s mother sighed too.
“Nora, Ethan helped Zoe because he wanted to finally put those old feelings behind him.”
“Once Zoe gets married someday, you and Ethan can naturally settle down and live your lives together.”
I shook my head.
“But I don’t want a life with him anymore.”
I looked at Ethan.
“Let’s break up.”
His expression finally changed.
“Nora, you have a fever. We’ll talk when you’ve calmed down.”
“I am calm. We’re over.”
With that, I dragged my suitcase around him.
Just then, a member of the yacht staff hurried over.
“Mr. Sinclair, a yacht nearby has contacted us. They say they’re here to pick up Miss Bellamy.”
