Paolo’s face darkened. “No.”
He separated the hospital’s confirmation of the exchange chain from the rest of the papers and placed it on the table.
“Whether you say yes or no, the surgeries go ahead. The three families are saving each other, not buying me a guardian.”
I finished reading the legal documents. “Does Sofia know?”
“She knows. She has veto power, and she can propose someone else.”
At last, Sofia looked up. “Agreeing to meet you doesn’t mean I’m willing to go with you.”
“It shouldn’t,” I said. “Before you decide, you can review my contracts, my apartment, my studio. You can also speak to the lawyer alone.”
She studied me for a few seconds, then lowered her head and went back to undoing stitches.
Paolo smiled. “Now that sounds like a guardian.”
“I agree to enter the evaluation,” I said. “The final decision is hers.”
