I Made His Wife’s Dress Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 45

My father visited once during the week before the surgery.

He stood in the doorway for a long time before handing me the papers lifting the freeze on my royalty account. “Your grandfather signed.”

“It was always my money.”

“I know,” he said, his voice low. “We just used to pretend we didn’t.”

The second time Grandfather came, he didn’t mention Nathan Cross again. He only said that Whitmore would cover all of my mother’s medical costs not paid by insurance.

Adrian didn’t appear.

The lawyers informed me that he had petitioned for a court-supervised paternity test and was also demanding that the brand remove all publicity identifying Sabine as a designer of my work.

Sabine had gone back to the small Pennsylvania town where her birth mother had lived, taking Leo with her.

She didn’t message me again.

I didn’t ask after her.

For the first time in my life, I was saving my strength for the people who actually needed it.

Leo remained in the same apartment, with care arrangements made jointly by both sides’ lawyers. Adrian hadn’t abandoned the child who had called him Dad for five years just because he’d been deceived. He also didn’t use that ongoing care to prove some grand depth of feeling to me.

That was his life to bear, his responsibility to handle.
