I Signed Away Eight Million To Leave Him Chapter 14

“Mara.”

Her voice sounded as if she had aged ten years overnight.

“The process server came. Graham has locked himself in the study and won’t see anyone.”

I said nothing.

She let out a small sigh.

“I’m not calling to plead his case.”

“He entered your home, destroyed your mother’s photograph, and harassed you. It doesn’t matter how much he’d had to drink, that is no excuse.”

After a pause, she said quietly, “I’m sorry.”

It was the first time I had ever heard Beatrice Vale apologize to anyone.

“I thought giving you a trust and a house was protecting you. Then, I thought if I just stayed out of it, he would eventually come to his senses.”

“But he took all his resentment toward me out on you, and I didn’t stop it in time.”

“This is a wrong the Vale family did to you.”

I held the phone and looked at the old photograph, now sealed in a clear protective sleeve on my table.

“Mrs. Vale, you paid for my education and gave me a place to live after my mother died. I have always been grateful for that.”

“But I will not continue to endure the harm Graham caused me out of gratitude to you.”

“I know.” Her voice roughened. “I won’t interfere with the order. Not now, not ever.”
