I Sold His Gifts To Leave My Mafia Husband Chapter 14
Matteo didn’t leave.
He stayed on the steps of the building across the street for three days.
During the day, while I kept the bakery open, he just sat there. He didn’t come close, didn’t speak, and didn’t let anyone bring him anything.
On the first day, a customer asked, “Who’s that man outside?”
“I don’t know him.”
On the second day, the owner of the sandwich shop next door came over.
“Daisy, is that man threatening you? Want me to call the police?”
“No. The police can’t solve Vitale family business.”
“He’ll leave when he gets tired.”
On the evening of the third day, I pulled down the shutter.
Matteo stood up.
He had been wearing the same coat for three days, and it was now wrinkled and stained. He looked even more exhausted than when he’d arrived.
He stopped ten feet from my door.
“Daisy, I know you won’t forgive me.”
I said nothing.
“And I know what happened to Pearl can’t be fixed with an apology.”
He took an envelope from his pocket and set it by the door.
“This is my own money. It has nothing to do with the Family, and there are no conditions attached. Rachel verified the source.”
Then he turned and walked away.
Only after he had disappeared around the corner did I step outside.
Inside the envelope was a cashier’s check for four hundred thousand dollars, with a note attached.
“For Pearl. This isn’t compensation. It’s what I owe her. You can refuse my apology, but please don’t refuse her treatment for my sake.”
I looked at it for a long time.
Then I put the check away.
This wasn’t forgiveness.
Grandma needed long-term care. I wasn’t going to deny her better treatment just to prove a point to Matteo.
It was the only right choice he had made in this entire mess.
