I Took My Husband’s Mistress To Her Appointment. Then Sent Them Both To Prison Chapter 06

“No!”

Livia screamed and lunged for Rhys’s briefcase, dumping everything inside onto the floor. Documents scattered across the room. With trembling hands, she grabbed the two forged certificates from their gold-embossed folders.

“Look! Look at them! The proof is right here!”

She held them up, tears and snot streaking her face as she shrieked at both of us.

“Rhys, tell her they’re real! You promised you’d take care of everything today and marry me. You promised!”

At last, Rhys moved.

He ripped the documents from her hands before she could crush them and hurled them to the floor without so much as glancing at them.

“Enough!”

Livia flinched violently.

She stared at him in a daze, then at the fake judgment and certified marriage record lying open on the floor, then at my expressionless face. Finally, her eyes settled on Rhys’s cold, empty expression. Terror and betrayal crashed over her at once.

“You lied to me… Rhys, you’ve been lying this entire time? You never meant to divorce her? Those documents were fake?”

“You let me make a fool of myself for years? I ended pregnancy after pregnancy for you… and I believed every word.”

Her knees buckled. She collapsed amid the scattered papers and broke into ragged sobs. Rhys crouched and gathered her into his arms, but his eyes stayed locked on me, burning with fury.

“Genevieve.” He nearly ground my name between his teeth. His voice was low and hoarse, each word deliberate.

“What do you gain by humiliating everyone like this?”

“In five years, have I ever failed to provide for you?”

“Livia is young, and she’s carrying my child. She can’t handle this kind of stress.”

“If anything happens to her or the baby…” He stared at me, his voice turning glacial. ” Don’t you think that will come back on you?”

I inhaled. The air scraped my lungs like ice.

“What about you, Rhys?” I met his eyes, my voice so calm it sounded unfamiliar even to me.

“You deliberately killed the child I carried for four months. What kind of reckoning do you think you deserve?”

His face went white. For a split second, his gaze darted away.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

His tone hardened, and a trace of contempt curled his mouth. ” Is the problem that I haven’t given you enough money? If you want more, just say so.”

Money?

The room tilted. I couldn’t stop the cold shudders running through my body.

I had always been terrified he might think I wanted his money. From dating through marriage, I insisted on splitting everything.

I tracked every shared expense down to the last dollar and even paid half the fees for our marriage license and brief ceremony. In five years of marriage, he had voluntarily transferred money to me only once.

Twenty thousand dollars.

The “settlement” paid for with my child’s life.

“Why should you give her anything?”

Livia jerked upright in his arms, her voice shrill. Tears still covered her face, but her eyes had turned vicious.

“You couldn’t even protect your own baby. You already got twenty thousand dollars.”

“What else do you want—another payout? Is that why you came here?”

“I’ve seen women like you. Greedy, vain, obsessed with money. You chased Rhys shamelessly because he was the primary beneficiary of the Sterling family trust and everyone expected him to take over the family.”

Her words seemed to steady him.

Rhys stroked her back and looked at me with the serene arrogance of a man handing alms to the poor.

“Genevieve, I’ll give you enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life. But only if you stop interfering in the life Livia and I have built.”

He paused as if making an extraordinary sacrifice.

“If you behave, once Livia’s child is born safely, I might even allow you to be the baby’s godmother. That is the greatest concession I’m willing to make.”

The certainty in his voice scraped the last warmth from my chest. So this was what it felt like when a heart truly died.

It didn’t hurt anymore.

I was only exhausted, numb, and almost amused. I looked at the man I had once trusted with my life and let out a quiet laugh.

“Let’s get divorced, Rhys.”
