I Was The Mafia’s Maid Now I’m Their Regret Chapter 22

My father withdrew the application that same day.

But it didn’t end there.

That application had already gone through an internal Marino review. Several capos had seen the newly added line in the service ledger.

They had already been asking why the Bellandi family had acknowledged me first.

Now they had started asking why someone who had handled safe house supplies and guard rotations had no formal record for eighteen years.

Three days later, the consigliere sent me an invitation to a video conference.

“The Family needs to verify the service ledger.”

“The boss hopes you’ll return to the estate to participate.”

I replied directly.

“I won’t be returning. Video is fine.”

When the meeting began, my father, mother, Francesca, and Nico were all seated around the long table.

The service ledger sat in the middle.

The voices of several capos came through from another screen.

“Cosima, are the records you posted in the family group chat all genuine?”

“Yes.”

“Do the photos match the dates?”

“Yes. The original records are still in the chat.”

“Why didn’t you apply to have the consigliere register them?”

I looked at him.

“I did.”

“His answer was that they were just chores.”

The consigliere immediately said, “I judged by the boss’s standards.”

My father shot him a cold look.

“The rules are yours to enforce.”

“But every entry requires your signature.”

The consigliere pushed the ledger toward my father.

“Without your approval, I couldn’t have written her name down even if I wanted to.”

They started arguing.

One said he was just carrying out orders; the other said the consigliere had failed in his duties.

I said nothing.

They had used those same rules to keep me out.

Now those rules were finally stopping them from shifting the blame.

Someone on the other screen asked, “Nico, you’re the heir apparent. Do you know how often the safe house supplies are inventoried?”

Nico froze.

“That kind of thing was always handled by the ma…”

He stopped himself.

“Handled by who?”

“Cosima.”

“When there were gaps in the guard rotation, who rearranged the schedule?”

Nico’s face flushed a deep red.

“Her, too.”

“And after she left, who took over those tasks?”

He had no answer.

Francesca, who had been looking down, suddenly spoke.

“There were also a lot of things that should have been my responsibility that ended up falling to Cosima.”

“After Nico found the bug in Dad’s study, Dad promised someone would make him breakfast. It should have been my turn, but the next morning, Nico was the one banging on Cosima’s door.”

Nico whipped his head around.

“So now you’re putting it all on me?”

“You were the one who knocked on her door.”

“And you didn’t stop me!”

Their voices kept rising.

Mom tried to make them stop, while Father was still questioning the consigliere.

The scene around the long table dissolved into chaos.

I looked at those familiar faces and felt an immense distance.

After a long while, one of the capos on the screen rapped on the table.

“The service ledger is suspended pending a full review. All records will be rechecked.”

“And until that review is finished, Nico’s heir qualification assessment is suspended as well.”

Nico shot to his feet.

“On what grounds? What does that have to do with my assessment?”

“Because you don’t even know what the person you depended on for over a decade actually did.”

“The Family cannot be handed to an heir who only knows how to wait for someone to bring him lunch.”

Before the call was cut, Nico was still arguing with my father.

I closed my laptop and didn’t look back.

Luca sat across from me and slid a cup of coffee over.

“You knew it would turn out like this?”

“No.”

I picked up the cup.

“I just gave them the records they asked for.”

How they blamed each other after that had nothing to do with me.
