Adrian looks down.
Ellie is still standing. She’s shaking, but she’s alive.
The man behind me isn’t.
He collapses beside the table, blood spreading beneath him.
Adrian whips around.
“Who fired?”
Marcus lowers his gun.
Vanessa stares at him.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Marcus doesn’t answer her.
He walks across the room, stops beside me, and cuts through my restraints.
Then he bows his head.
“Ms. Vale.”
“About time.”
Marcus gives me the smallest smile.
“Had to make it convincing.”
Adrian looks between us.
“No.”
I walk to Ellie and pull her into my arms.
She clings to me.
“Mommy…”
“You’re okay.”
Adrian raises his gun toward Marcus.
Marcus is faster.
So are the men outside.
Weapons rise.
This time, every barrel points at Adrian and Vanessa.
“You betrayed me.”
Marcus looks almost offended.
“I was never yours.”
Vanessa backs toward the wall.
“No. Your men switched sides. We saw them.”
“You saw what Serena wanted you to see,” Marcus says.
Adrian turns to me.
I pick up the transfer papers.
Then I tear them in half.
“You really thought you took the Vale Mafia from me?”
“You were locked in here for a week.”
“Because I let you lock me in here.”
His eyes narrow.
“That’s bullshit.”
I look at Marcus.
He places another folder on the table.
I open it.
Bank transfers, encrypted messages, names and dates.
Every member Adrian approached.
Every account he tried to move.
Every piece of information he handed over.
I slide the folder toward him.
“You started recruiting my people three months ago.”
Adrian stares at the documents.
“I knew after the second conversation.”
His eyes snap to Marcus.
Marcus shrugs.
“You picked the wrong man to recruit.”
Vanessa glares at me.
“Even if Adrian failed, you’ve lost people. You’ve lost money.”
I turn to her.
“And then there’s Black Viper.”
Her face changes.
Adrian looks between us.
“What does Black Viper have to do with her?”
I take another file from Marcus.
“Vanessa Cole isn’t who she told you she was.”
Vanessa takes a step back.
“Adrian, don’t listen to her.”
I toss the file onto the table.
Photographs spill across it.
Vanessa entering Black Viper properties.
Adrian picks up a photograph.
“Black Viper sent her.”
“No.”
Vanessa reaches for him.
“Adrian—”
I continue.
“She didn’t fall in love with you. She found the one man close enough to me to open the door from the inside.”
Vanessa glares at me.
“You think you’ve won?”
“I know I have.”
“Black Viper will tear this place apart.”
Marcus laughs.
Vanessa looks at him.
I check my watch.
“They would.”
I pause.
“If they still had anything left.”
Her face goes pale.
I place one final set of photographs on the table.
Burned compounds.
Seized weapons.
Black Viper’s major operations destroyed.
Vanessa stares at them.
“No.”
“While you were helping Adrian take my empire, my people were dismantling yours.”
I step closer.
“You wanted my empire so badly.”
Adrian looks at me.
I smile.
“You should’ve checked whether you ever actually had it.”
