My Best Friend My Husband And My Divorce Chapter 02

My Best Friend My Husband And My Divorce Chapter 02

I could faintly hear a woman’s moans through the phone.

Before I could say anything, the call was immediately hung up.

I gripped my iPhone tightly, my stomach churning.

I rushed into the master bathroom and vomited violently.

I didn’t sleep all night.

When Caleb came home in the morning and saw my pale complexion, he froze slightly.

“What’s wrong with you?”

He put down his suit jacket and walked toward me.

He reached out to feel my forehead, but I turned my head away.

His movement stopped in mid-air, somewhat bewildered.

“Nothing, I didn’t sleep well last night.”

I met his gaze and replied flatly.

Sensing my coldness, he unusually softened his tone to coax me.

“Are you mad at me? I was wrong. I shouldn’t have been harsh with you last night.”

“But Zoe is your best friend. You’ve been spoiled by your family since childhood, and Zoe has always been accommodating to you.”

“I was just afraid you’d hurt her feelings and lose her as a friend. I got a bit anxious.”

“Don’t be angry with me, okay?”

He spoke with apparent sincerity, as if he was really thinking about my social circle.

Every time he fought with me over Zoe, this was always his excuse.

Now hearing it only made me feel nauseous.

Seeing I wasn’t responding, he pulled out a small velvet box.

“This is our anniversary gift. I accidentally left it at the office yesterday. I’m giving it to you now as a makeup gift. Do you like it?”

I glanced at the Cartier bracelet in his hand – it was a style Zoe had always loved.

He moved to put it on me.

As he got closer, I caught sight of red marks under his shirt collar, and his body emanated a strong vanilla scent – the smell of Le Labo perfume that Zoe loved to use.

I covered my mouth and pushed him away forcefully.

“Stay away from me.”

I rushed into the bathroom again and vomited violently.

Caleb’s face darkened after coaxing me for so long, and now he completely exploded.

“What exactly are you making a fuss about?! Do you want me to find a psychologist to look at your paranoid delusions?”

“Can’t you learn from Zoe? She’s always so understanding, not like you who just creates drama all day long!”

I washed my face with cold water and came out, meeting his impatient gaze.

“Since Zoe is so wonderful, go find her then.”

He pointed at me and yanked off his tie, throwing it hard on the carpet.

“You’re absolutely unreasonable!”

He slammed the door and left.

In the living room, only I remained with the vanilla scent lingering in the air that wouldn’t dissipate.

I looked at the door that had been slammed so hard it shook, my eyes burning with heat.

Just then, my phone vibrated.

I discovered that Zoe’s Instagram account I followed had updated her Stories.

After seeing the content, my heart felt like it was being stirred by a knife.

“Gift from someone yesterday”

“Just because I mentioned liking this brand, he swiped his card and cleared out all the new items from this season’s boutique, saying it was to make up for the grievance of me having to watch him spend his anniversary with another woman.”

“But this bracelet is so ugly. I had already thrown it in the trash, but thinking of that idiot still throwing tantrums, I magnanimously let him take it back to appease that idiot. After all, she’s only worthy of picking up my unwanted garbage.”

The Story included two photos.

One showed shopping bags filling the living room of a luxury apartment, and another showed the bracelet lying in a trash can – the very anniversary gift Caleb had just tried to give me.

My fingertips had gone numb.

The trembling crept from my fingertips throughout my entire body, even my jaw was shaking.

In college, Caleb was a poor student burdened with heavy student loans.

But to buy me a birthday gift, he worked multiple jobs at Starbucks and restaurants, finally emptying his bank account to buy me a Tiffany engagement ring.

I saw his hands covered with frostbite and calluses as he held the ring, and I cried from heartache.

I cried and said he could have just bought a silver ring, that he didn’t need to spend so much money.

He smiled dotingly, his eyes sparkling with light, promising earnestly:

“How could I be casual about it? Grace deserves the best things in this world.”

“Don’t worry, when my startup goes public, I’ll bring all the world’s best things to you.”

I smiled through tears and said okay.

I waited and waited, finally waiting for his company to ring the bell and become a sought-after tech nouveau riche in Silicon Valley.

But the promises he once made had long since scattered in the wind. Now in his eyes, I was only worthy of picking up other people’s garbage.

I used to think the saying “where a man spends his money is where his heart is” was very materialistic.

Now it seemed to be exactly right.

I had accompanied him from a penniless college student to a CEO worth hundreds of millions now.

He was still handsome, and I still felt my heart flutter for him.

Until this moment, when my heart was crushed inch by inch by him, it could no longer beat.

Caleb, we have no future.
