My Boyfriend’s Childhood Sweetheart Set Me Up As An Escort Chapter 10
The Overpass
Two years pass.
I’m at my desk when my assistant comes in. Face tight.
“Commissioner. Priority call. Homicide.”
I take the file. And freeze.
The Griffins.
Mr. and Mrs. Griffin. Found dead in their home.
And Shane? Missing.
Because of the family’s connection to me, the department flags it immediately. I recuse myself from the investigation but stay briefed.
The scene report comes back. This wasn’t a robbery.
Cash untouched. Jewelry still in the drawer.
Both victims stabbed multiple times. This is personal.
This is revenge.
We’re two days into the investigation when my phone rings.
“Commissioner. We found Griffin. He’s alive.”
“But we’ve got a situation.”
I turn on the news. Every channel.
An overpass downtown. Reporters and emergency vehicles packed in below.
And on the ledge—Sadie.
Fresh out of prison. Early release for good behavior.
She’s got Shane by the collar. A knife pressed against his throat.
Both of them on the edge.
Sadie is screaming at the cameras. Hoarse. Wild.
“Two years! I did two years because of that bitch!”
“I get out and I’ve got nothing! Nothing!”
“My family won’t talk to me! I can’t get a job! I can’t rent an apartment!”
“And this piece of shit—” she shakes Shane— “he started all of it! He brought her to that dinner! He chose her over me!”
She’s ranting. Crying. Spitting.
I get to the scene in minutes.
Every officer on-site turns and looks at me. Worried.
I look up at the ledge. Sadie. Shane.
The negotiator is talking, but she’s not listening. She’s too far gone.
I take the megaphone.
“Sadie. It’s Erin.”
She goes quiet. Looks down. Finds me in the crowd.
Her face twists.
“YOU. You ruined my life!”
“No, Sadie. You ruined your own life. I just made sure there were consequences.”
“But this—what you’re doing right now—this doesn’t have to be how it ends.”
“Let him go. Step back from the edge. We can talk.”
She laughs. Cracked. Broken.
“Talk? TALK? You want to talk NOW?”
“Where was all this talk when I was rotting in a cell?”
“No. No more talking.”
She presses the knife harder. Blood beads at Shane’s neck.
“You want him alive? Then you come up here. Alone.”
“Face me. Like you should have faced me two years ago.”
I look at my officers. They’re shaking their heads.
I hand the megaphone to Reeves.
“Give me five minutes.”
“Commissioner—”
“Five minutes, Captain.”
I start walking toward the overpass stairs.
That’s when Shane looks down.
His eyes find mine.
For the first time in two years, I see something real in them.
Not love. Not desire. Just… recognition.
His lips move.
I’m sorry.
Then he moves.
Fast. Desperate.
He slams his head backward into Sadie’s face. Grabs her wrist. Twists the knife away.
But they’re too close to the edge. The momentum carries them both.
For one second, they’re suspended. Shane’s eyes still on mine.
Then they’re gone.
The fall is short. The sound is not.
Silence.
Then chaos.
Paramedics rush forward. But I already know.
I stand at the railing. Look down at the two shapes on the pavement below.
A cop drapes a blanket over my shoulders. I didn’t realize I was shaking.
Reeves appears beside me. Doesn’t say anything. Just stands there.
I stare down at the scene for a long time.
Three years ago. A Christmas dinner.
A stack of doctored photos. A stream full of strangers.
A man who didn’t believe me. A woman who wanted to destroy me.
And this is how it ends.
Not with justice. Not with closure.
Just silence. And snow.
I turn away from the railing.
“Captain. I’m going home.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
I walk to my car. Sit behind the wheel.
Don’t start the engine for a long time.
Then I drive north. Toward my parents’ farm.
Toward the only people who never needed proof.
【The End】
