My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 17

But not long after that, someone dug up the old story of my father’s bankruptcy.

Almost overnight, the way Nathan looked at me turned cold.

I waited for him outside his office, and he stopped a few feet away, his tone distant.

“Elise, you and I are from different worlds.”

It stung, badly.

But even then, I didn’t give up.

I chased him for nearly three years, clinging to the belief that the concern he tried to hide was real, convinced I could be the exception to the rule.

In the end, even Tessa couldn’t stand to watch anymore.

She dragged me to a bar, flagged down a handsome investment banker, and pushed me into the seat across from him.

“Tonight, you are not allowed to say the name Nathan. He is not the only man on the planet.”

The banker was charming. He made sure my glass was never empty and managed to make me laugh more than once. Then my phone buzzed.

Nathan’s name lit up the screen.

I stared at it for a few seconds before answering.

His voice was low. “Where are you?”

For some reason, I sat up straighter and lied. “At home.”

The word had barely left my mouth when the music and laughter of the bar seemed to swell around me, painfully loud.

Two seconds of dead silence on the other end.

When he spoke again, his voice was tight with controlled fury, each word clipped and hard.

“Elise. Turn around. I’m in the booth behind you.”
