My Fake Death Was The Punchline To His Cruel Joke Chapter 24
At the first evidence conference, the long table across from me was filled with faces both familiar and strange.
Every one of them had appeared in the cloud album.
Some had laughed when I’d stumbled. Some had raised a glass when I was thrown out of the gala. Two of them had held my shoulders at Camille’s birthday party.
Today, they all wore dark suits and somber expressions, as if we were complete strangers.
Their lead attorney spoke first.
“My clients are willing to acknowledge that they may have witnessed certain events, but they were not party to the overall situation and did not participate in its planning.”
Leo clicked on the projector.
The first video froze on an image of my bleeding heels.
“Who took the brooch?” Leo asked the silent room.
No one spoke.
The video played on. The camera panned to Camille’s chest, the brooch pinned to her dress. In the background, a man’s voice raised the bet.
Leo turned up the volume.
“Five hundred says she quits in under half an hour.”
The voice belonged to the man at the end of the table, the one who had just claimed he knew nothing. He immediately dropped his gaze to the table.
His attorney jumped in. “That doesn’t prove he was involved in any of the subsequent incidents.”
“Of course not,” I said, and hit play on the next video.
The guest list for test ninety-seven appeared on the screen.
