Leo squared his jaw and stepped in front of me. He said to Chloe, “She’s my mommy. She’s not going with you.”
Julian moved to my side, shielding both Leo and me behind him without a word.
Chloe cried even harder.
“No! She’s my mommy! You can’t steal my mommy!”
She lunged forward to hug me again. I stepped back, and she missed, falling face-first into the snow.
Marco rushed to help her up.
But Chloe shoved his hand away and tipped her face up to me, tears and melted snow running down her cheeks.
“Mommy, I’ll never call you ‘bad woman’ again. I’ll only call you Mommy.”
“I don’t want Sofia anymore. I’ll yell at her for you. I’ll help you yell at her, okay?”
I crouched down and gently brushed the snow from her hat.
She thought I was going to hug her, and her sobs grew louder.
But I only drew my hand back and looked at her.
“Chloe, live a good life with your father.”
“As for Sofia… whatever you want her to be, that’s up to you.”
