Chiara’s voice was quiet. “Every time it gets to the most important part, he stops. He did it again tonight.”

“That’s because every time you ask him, Francesca, one of her allies in the Pack, or a Nightfall elder is nearby.”

Chiara froze.

The garden at the Pack estate. The chapel doors. The street outside the convenience store. Every time, Francesca had been there, or had known where she was.

Every time he got close to speaking, Francesca would appear—or word would somehow make its way back to the Pack House.

It wasn’t a coincidence.

Sterling took a sip of his coffee.

“Think about it,” he said. “That’s all I’m going to say. The rest isn’t my story to tell, and it’s not for Ironwood to decide for you.”

He picked up his coat and headed for the door.

“You picked up that ring. Your scent is all over your pocket. It’s obvious. Whether you wear it again is your choice.”

He paused. “Just don’t choose me out of gratitude. Gratitude and love aren’t the same thing.”
