Chiara opened the door.
Francesca stood in the hallway, wearing a beige cardigan and holding an insulated food container. The scent of the Pack estate clung to her.
Even now, she was perfectly put together.
“What are you doing here so late?” Chiara asked.
“Mom made soup and asked me to bring it to you.” Francesca held out the container. “She was worried you haven’t been eating properly.”
Chiara didn’t take it.
“Did Mom really ask you to come?”
Francesca didn’t answer right away.
She looked down at the container in her hands. After a long moment, she spoke.
“Chiara, there’s something I never told you.”
She lifted her head, her eyes red-rimmed, just enough to evoke sympathy.
“Two days before Dad’s accident, I went to his study to find him. Before I reached the door, I heard him talking to Griffin.”
“Dad said he was most worried about you, but that the person he owed the most to was me. He told Griffin he had to choose one of us.”
Chiara’s fingers tightened into a fist.
Francesca wasn’t looking at her. She was staring at the lamp in the entryway, as if lost in a memory.
“Griffin was silent for a long time. So long that I thought he wouldn’t answer. And then he said—”
