My Husband Faked Our Marriage So I Destroyed His Empire Chapter 02
The next morning, I forced myself to remain calm and went back to the hospital for a follow-up.
In the consultation room, the doctor flipped through my chart. His frown deepened with every page.
“Ms. Shaw, your body has been put through far too much.”
My fingertips went cold. My heart seemed to stop.
“Several of your earlier embryos were excellent quality. But each time implantation succeeded, your guardian signed off on terminating the pregnancy. After that, repeated egg retrievals and hormonal stimulation severely damaged your ovarian function.”
He paused. Seeing my face drain of color, he softened his voice.
“Your body has taken serious damage. Natural pregnancy in the future will be almost impossible.”
The world went silent.
All the details I had ignored rushed back to me.
Twenty IVF cycles across three years.
Adrian and I were both healthy, yet we had never had a child.
It turned out I had not been unlucky.
I had succeeded before.
It was Adrian who, while I lay unconscious, had personally given up our children again and again.
I braced a hand against the wall and walked out of the room. The sunlight was blinding, but none of it reached the cold place inside me.
On the way home, I opened Chloe’s social feed.
Her latest post was a clear prenatal report. The caption was smug.
“After all this effort, Adrian finally got me pregnant. Can’t wait to meet our baby boy.”
It had been posted one month before my twentieth embryo transfer.
I understood everything at once.
Adrian had not repeatedly ended my transfers because he did not want a child.
He wanted Chloe’s child.
He wanted Chloe’s child to become the legitimate heir of the Whitmore family.
He wanted to destroy my ability to have children and make me raise someone else’s child for the rest of my life.
Chloe was even more ruthless than her mother, Lydia.
Tears gathered in my eyes, but none fell.
I remembered the final days of my mother’s life. She had been so thin she looked like a skeleton.
Adrian held her hand and promised, “I’ll protect Evie. I’ll stay with her forever.”
Only then did my mother close her eyes in peace.
But Adrian, in the end, even you hurt me.
When I returned to the villa, I walked straight to the nursery I had decorated with my own hands.
The moment I opened the door, my blood turned cold.
The warm room I had prepared for my daughter, full of pink plush toys, had been stripped clean.
The dolls had been replaced with cars and airplanes. The pink had become deep ocean blue.
I thought of Chloe’s words: baby boy.
The child had not even been born, and Adrian had already prepared a room for him.
Hearing movement upstairs, Adrian came up. When he saw me at the door, panic flashed across his face.
“Honey, I just thought, what if it’s a boy? I had the blue set installed too, just to be safe.”
“Boy or girl, the baby will have a room of their own.”
He smiled gently, as if certain I would compromise, just as my mother had compromised again and again for my sake.
I did not expose him.
He thought I would be like before, demanding to know who he really loved.
Instead, I only glanced around, pushed his hand away, and said calmly, “Looks good.”
Adrian froze. Clearly, he had not expected that reaction.
He seemed to want to say more, but I did not look at him again. I did not look at the blinding blue nursery either.
I went straight back to the bedroom.
The moment I closed the door, my phone vibrated.
It was my lawyer.
“Ms. Shaw, the ten percent stake in Whitmore Group has been sold. Funds should arrive this week. The evidence chain regarding the forged marriage certificate is complete, and the lawsuit is ready to be filed.”
“Also, we have declined the project appointment on your behalf.”
I looked at the screen, my fingers trembling.
