My Last Birthday: I Died While Mommy Said She Was Done With Me Chapter 06
The ambulance arrived very quickly.
The doctor in charge rushed inside.
“Where is the patient?”
Daddy pointed toward the bathroom with a shaking hand.
The paramedics hurried in and knelt beside me.
After checking me for a long time, the doctor slowly stood up and shook his head.
“There are no signs of life.”
“Her body is already stiff. She’s been gone for a while.”
Mommy suddenly looked up.
“That’s not true! She’s just sleeping! My Emily is just tired!”
She tried to rush over, but one of the nurses held her back.
“You have to save her!”
“You’re doctors! You have to be able to do something!”
“Ma’am, please calm down. Your daughter is already…”
“Get out! All of you, get out!”
Mommy screamed through her tears.
“Would I ever hurt my own child? She’s just sick! She just needs to rest!”
Daddy grabbed Mommy and held her tightly before she could fall apart completely.
He pressed her face against his chest so she wouldn’t have to look at me anymore.
His face was covered in tears.
His voice was so hoarse he could barely speak.
“I’m sorry. She was in so much pain. Please, just understand…”
An older nurse sighed and quietly spoke to the doctor.
“We should report this and let the police handle the rest.”
Not long after the call was made, the police arrived too.
They asked questions and took notes, their calm voices sounding completely wrong in a house that had just fallen apart.
“When was the last time you saw your daughter?”
“Yesterday afternoon. Before we took our younger daughter to school.”
“Did she seem unusual at the time?”
“She said her chest hurt. We thought it was the same problem she always had. We thought she was just throwing a fit.”
…
Mommy answered the questions, but her voice wouldn’t stop shaking.
Daddy held her tightly, but he was shaking too.
He had to take several deep breaths just to get his words out.
I stood beside them and watched as the police made Mommy and Daddy go over that afternoon again and again.
The afternoon that had ended with me dying.
Watching them hurt like this made my heart feel like it was being poked by a thousand tiny needles.
I turned toward the paramedics and the police officers, bowing again and again.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble.”
Even though no one could see me.
Lily was completely overwhelmed by everything happening around her.
She curled up in the corner of the living room, clutching an old stuffed doll.
Her big eyes were full of fear and confusion.
When a police officer walked past her, she looked up timidly.
“Officer, what happened to my sister?”
“Why does she keep sleeping? When is she going to wake up and play with me?”
A young female officer who was taking notes suddenly stopped writing.
She looked up at Lily’s innocent little face.
Her eyes turned red almost instantly.
She quickly lowered her head and blinked hard a few times.
“Sweetie, your sister went somewhere very far away to rest.”
Lily frowned.
“Somewhere far away?”
“Is it farther than school?”
“When is she coming back?”
The officer’s throat tightened.
She turned her face away and quickly wiped the corner of her eye with the back of her hand.
She couldn’t answer.
When Mommy heard Lily’s questions, a broken sob escaped her.
She bit down hard on her own hand so she wouldn’t start screaming again.
The questioning finally came to an end.
The police and paramedics spoke quietly to each other before leaving.
Then the house was left with nothing but a heavy, awful silence.
Daddy sank into a chair and buried both hands in his hair.
Mommy sat there like she wasn’t even alive anymore, holding my body tightly in her arms.
Lily walked over and gently tugged on Mommy’s pants.
“Mommy, I’m hungry.”
Mommy didn’t move.
“Mommy, when is Emily coming back?”
“I miss her.”
Those words finally broke whatever was left of Mommy.
She let out a scream that sounded like her heart was being ripped apart.
“She’s not coming back!”
“Lily, Emily’s never coming back!”
“It was Mommy’s fault!”
“All of this was Mommy’s fault!”
