My Surgeon Husband Rebuilt My Face To Match His First Love’s Chapter 01
The Woman in the Mask
A car crash ruined my face.
My boyfriend, one of the best plastic surgeons, performed the surgery himself and gave me a perfect new face.
At first, I could get used to that beautiful, unfamiliar face, and he would comfort me.
He said I was his greatest masterpiece, a priceless work of art.
And he would hold my face in his hands and kiss it like something he was afraid of losing.
Until our wedding day, I saw a face exactly like mine.
—
Something is off with Graham at our wedding.
His eyes stay fixed on one corner of the room, distant and unfocused.
I think he might be feeling sick, so I ask, “What’s wrong?”
He pulls his gaze back and smiles.
“Nothing. I’m just nervous.”
I nod and look in the direction he was staring.
A woman is sitting there with a mask on, her head lowered so deeply that I can only make out part of her brows and eyes.
For some reason, they look a little familiar.
But I do not know her.
Maybe she is one of Graham’s coworkers.
I only glance at her briefly and do not think much of it.
There are still wedding details to get through, and I force myself to focus on what comes next.
When Graham and I make our way through the reception to greet the guests, we arrive at that woman’s table.
She is still wearing the mask, and now a pair of oversized glasses hides even more of her face.
Her outfit is strange enough that I cannot help leaning toward Graham and asking quietly, “Who is she?”
Graham is not himself today. I have to nudge him with my arm before he snaps out of it.
His voice is tight when he answers, “Just an old classmate.”
The moment he says that, the woman’s hand jerks hard around her wineglass. Wine spills out, and a few drops splash onto her dress.
The red stain looks painfully bright against the white dress.
She grabs napkins and starts wiping at it in a rush, her movements frantic.
I cannot stand watching her struggle.
I am about to ask if she wants to go upstairs with me and change when the entire ballroom suddenly goes dark.
The big screen begins playing our wedding photos.
Photos of Graham and me fill the screen, holding hands, embracing, kissing, every one of them showing the happiness everyone thinks we have.
The guests around us begin to clap.
That woman stares blankly at the screen for a long time. Then, as if she can no longer hold herself together, she suddenly crouches down and bursts into tears.
Her shoulders shake so hard that tears fall straight onto the floor.
Everything happens so suddenly that I freeze, completely confused.
I am about to ask Graham what is going on with this old classmate of his.
Then I see his jaw tighten.
He looks like he is barely holding something back.
A bad feeling drops into my chest.
Graham calls a server over and has them help the woman up from the floor. Then he asks the server to take her upstairs to change.
During a break in the reception, I go upstairs.
In a room with the door not fully closed, I see the woman from earlier.
She is wearing my backup red dress.
Her long hair falls loose over her shoulders, and even from behind, there is something strangely familiar about her.
It feels like I should know her.
But why?
Before I can figure it out, she takes off the mask and the oversized glasses.
The moment I see her face, shock hits me so hard that I cannot move.
I am unable to believe my own eyes.
On that woman’s face, I see one exactly like mine.
