No One Came Chapter 06

No One Came Chapter 06

My clothes hadn’t been changed.

The swelling on my face had subsided a little, but my lips were an even darker shade of purple.

“Adriana?”

Mom’s voice changed.

She finally sensed that something was wrong.

I never skipped school.

Not even when I was furious.

Because I knew skipping school would only make everything worse.

So no matter how awful I felt, I always got up on time and went to school on time.

She knew that.

So this time, she finally came closer.

She walked to the side of the bed and reached out to touch my shoulder.

“Adriana? Don’t scare me…”

My body shifted under her touch.

Cold and stiff, like something that had hardened.

Mom’s hand recoiled as if she’d been burned.

She stared at my face.

At the lingering swelling.

At my purple lips.

At my curled fingers.

Her eyes widened in horror.

“Adriana!”

Mom’s scream ripped through the house.

She threw herself onto the bed and grabbed my face.

Ice-cold.

Then she fumbled to check for breath under my nose.

Nothing.

Her hands were shaking uncontrollably as she frantically picked up her phone to dial 911.

“Please, come! My daughter… my daughter, she… she isn’t moving…”

She got the address wrong twice.

Her voice was choked with sobs.

“Please hurry… she seems… she seems…”

She still couldn’t bring herself to say the word.

I floated beside her, watching, and she suddenly seemed like a stranger.

So she could cry.

So she could be afraid.

So she did care about me, after all.
