No One Came Chapter 10
The hallway fell silent.
They stood just a few feet apart.
But it felt like a gulf that could never be crossed.
That afternoon, the police came.
They asked Mom a lot of questions.
When was the last time she’d seen me alive?
Had I mentioned feeling unwell?
Did everyone in the house know about my peanut allergy?
Mom told them everything.
When she got to the part about Nico putting peanut sauce on my plate, she hesitated.
“My son… he was just messing around.”
Even now, her first instinct was to make excuses for Nico.
Nico was taken from school by the police.
When they came for him, he was in gym class.
His classmates said that at first, he was still laughing.
He thought he was in some kind of minor trouble and even told his friends, “It’s fine. My dad will handle it.”
It wasn’t until he got to the police station that he realized something was terribly wrong.
Mom sat there, her eyes red and her hair a mess. She looked like she had aged ten years overnight.
“Mom, what’s going on?”
Nico still looked bewildered.
“What happened to Sis? Did she really not eat dinner?”
Mom lifted her head and looked at him.
Her eyes were completely different. All the old warmth was gone.
It was like she was looking at a stranger.
“Nico, what were you thinking yesterday when you put that peanut sauce on your sister’s plate?”
“I just… I just wanted to play a joke on her…”
“A joke?”
