Premature Labor After The Alpha Took My Hospital Bag Chapter 10
I stared at the pale face reflected in the metal door and let out a long, slow breath.
Stepping outside the infirmary, I found the world had transformed—a torrential downpour had begun at some point, and cold wind laced with rain hit me full in the face.
Shirley stood at the bottom of the steps with an umbrella. The moment she saw me, she hurried up and draped a heavy coat over my shoulders.
“Melinda, the enforcement squad already took Alina away. Dennis is still in there losing his mind. Let’s go—now.”
I nodded, pulled the coat tight around me, and followed Shirley into the curtain of rain.
I saw Dennis stumble out of the infirmary behind us.
He was soaked through, clothes plastered to his body, casting about wildly in the rain like a man stripped of every last shred of dignity.
He spotted Shirley’s car and charged toward it like a man possessed, slamming both hands against the window, rain streaming down his face in rivulets.
“Melinda, don’t go—please, give me one more chance. I can’t live without you. Come home with me, please!”
He pounded on the glass, his palms reddening from the impact, his voice cutting through the storm, raw and desperate.
I regarded him coldly, then lowered the window a crack. Icy rain immediately slipped through the gap and spattered against my face.
“Dennis, there is no home between us anymore. You destroyed it with your own hands last night.”
“This devoted act you’re putting on now only makes me sick. Let go. Don’t make me drive through you.”
He shook his head violently, tears and rain indistinguishable on his face, fingers clawing at the window gap until his nails bled.
“I won’t let go—I’ll die before I let go. Melinda, forgive me just once. I’ll give you my life if that’s what it takes!”
I let out a cold laugh, reached into my bag, and pulled out the bonding contract we’d signed at our mating ceremony. I tore it to pieces and tossed the shreds through the gap in the window.
“The bond is severed. This contract is nothing but waste paper. Consider this the last scrap of dignity I’m leaving you—otherwise, I’ll destroy your reputation beyond repair.”
The fragments of the contract were instantly soaked by the rain, drifting into the puddles on the ground like weightless things. Dennis watched them fall and broke apart entirely.
His knees buckled and he dropped heavily into the muddy water, hands shaking as he scrambled to collect the pieces, trying desperately to wipe them dry.
“Don’t you dare leave me, Melinda! You’re my wife—you’ll be mine for the rest of your life!”
Looking at his unhinged, irrational desperation, I had no desire to watch any longer. I turned to Shirley in the driver’s seat, my voice flat and final.
“Drive. Don’t worry about him.”
The car surged forward, spraying a sheet of muddy water directly into Dennis’s face.
I watched him in the rearview mirror—a man kneeling in the rain, his figure growing smaller and smaller until he dissolved entirely into the gray curtain of the storm.
He would spend the rest of his life drowning in endless regret and suffering. That was the punishment he deserved. And my life was only just beginning.
Half an hour later, I arrived at the new care facility where my brother had been transferred.
The attending physician stood outside the door holding a report, exhaustion and relief mingled on his face.
“Miss Melinda, good news. Your brother’s brain waves just showed strong fluctuations. There’s an excellent chance he’ll regain consciousness.”
Hearing those words, the weight that had been suspended in my chest finally settled to solid ground. The tension I’d carried all day released in a single, quiet exhale.
I stepped past the doctor and walked to the observation window of the ICU, gazing at my brother lying in the hospital bed. My eyes burned with the threat of tears.
I raised my hand and pressed my palm flat against the cold glass, tracing the outline of my brother’s pale face through that transparent barrier.
“Hold on just a little longer. Your sister is here now. No one will ever hurt you again.”
