Reborn To Reject My Regretful Mate For The King Chapter 04
Julian was silent for a long time.
He looked me over, clearly unconvinced.
“Adrian may favor Evelyn, but you’re his sister. He would never do something like this to you.”
I lowered my eyes.
I wanted to know how he could do it, too.
There were a million ways to change fate.
But Adrian had only ever offered two choices: either Evelyn died, or I died for her.
My silence only cemented Julian’s belief that I was lying.
“Camille, I know what I said before I died in our last life. But I was given another chance, and I’m still willing to offer you marriage.”
“At first, I just wanted to find Evelyn a safe, reliable mate so we could all have a good life.”
“Now I see you don’t deserve my consideration.”
His voice turned cold.
“There’s something else you should know.”
“In our last life, you were pregnant. Twice.”
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
Julian went on. “I had my private healer hide the results from you. Then I mixed abortifacients into the nutritional tonics you drank every day.”
The words exploded in my head.
In my last life, I had agonized for years over my infertility.
I knew Julian loved children. I knew his mother wanted heirs.
But my body only grew weaker, and no matter what treatments I tried, I could never carry a child.
After Julian died, I took over his affairs and cared for his mother, who had lost her only son.
Even when I was so sick I could barely stand, I believed I had failed him.
But I’d had the one thing I wanted most in the world.
He was the one who had taken both our children from me, then let the drugs slowly poison my body.
There was no remorse on his face. Only a weary sort of justification.
“Evelyn died because of the choice we made. We didn’t deserve children then.”
“In this life, she’s still alive. We had a chance to make things right.”
“But you still want to force her into the same fate. I won’t allow it.”
“In one month, I’m holding a public wedding ceremony with Evelyn.”
“Greymoor Pack only recognizes one official mate, so she will have the public title. You can stay in my private residence and enjoy the same financial security.”
“On the same day, I will hold a private commitment ceremony with you. It won’t be public, and it won’t be registered. Adrian has already agreed.”
He said it as if he were granting me a great mercy.
In reality, he planned to marry Evelyn in public, hide me away in private, and have me accept a life shared between three people.
“I’ll take care of you both.”
He left after that.
It wasn’t until dusk that Adrian returned to my room.
“The broker in Northvale has confirmed everything. You’ll leave on the same day as Evelyn’s wedding.”
I looked at the flicker of guilt on his face and answered evenly, “Fine. Have it your way.”
…
For the next month, Julian never came to see Camille alone again.
He assumed his words had frightened her and that she needed time to accept reality.
Still, he sent a steady stream of gifts to both sisters’ rooms.
He told himself he was nothing like Adrian. In his mind, he had never been cruel to Camille.
Camille accepted every gift and never argued again.
Julian took her silence as acceptance of his arrangement.
Word spread like wildfire through the Pack: the captain of the Greymoor Guard was publicly marrying his childhood sweetheart’s younger sister, while keeping his former fiancée as a private, unacknowledged mistress.
People clamored to attend the wedding—not to offer blessings, but to witness the scandal firsthand.
After a discussion with Adrian, Julian decided that Camille would wait until after the public ceremony ended, then use the hotel’s employee passage to reach the top-floor suite for the private ritual that could never be registered.
Adrian hesitated, but in the end, he agreed.
Julian assumed he was simply feeling sorry for Camille.
On the day of the wedding, Julian slipped a ring onto Evelyn’s finger.
After the guests dispersed, he waited alone in the suite until late into the night.
Camille never came.
Adrian had been drinking heavily, staring north in a daze all evening.
Julian dragged him into an empty lounge.
“Where is Camille? Why hasn’t the driver brought her yet?”
Adrian seemed to sober up in an instant.
Leaning against the wall, he looked as if he had aged ten years.
A long time passed before he finally spoke. “I gave Camille to someone else a long time ago.”
“The same crippled man from the dream. The one who got Evelyn killed so badly there wasn’t a whole body left.”
Julian went rigid.
