Regrets Of What Was Lost Chapter 07
I found out Tucker was cheating because of something small.
Once, when we were in bed, his hand brushed against the sheet and didn’t snag.
I took his fingers in mine and looked closely.
The edges of his nails were smooth and rounded. No hangnails.
“What is it?”
Tucker turned to look at me.
“Your nails are smooth. The hangnails are gone.”
“Oh.”
He pulled his hand back and casually ran his fingers through my hair.
“One of my nails split during a meeting today, so I filed them down. Go to sleep.”
Then he turned off the light.
In the darkness, his hand rested on the pillow beside me.
Round. Smooth. Not a single rough edge left to catch a thread.
In seven years of marriage, Tucker had never once filed his nails.
He’d only clip his hangnails when I reminded him.
He always said manicures were something only women cared about.
A change like that couldn’t have been an accident.
I have a friend who’s a lawyer. She told me not to let on that I knew.
But my gut told me I couldn’t just do nothing.
So I put a voice recorder in his car.
Three days later, I heard their conversations.
They talked about work. Project timelines, quarterly reviews, promotion opportunities.
Legally, the recordings were useless.
But I’d already found what I was looking for.
