She was quiet for a long time before adding softly, “Then when are you going to transfer me the money you promised? I’m carrying a six-hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage now. The monthly payments are huge. I can’t keep up.”
I shook my head.
“I can’t move a single dollar from my accounts right now. We aren’t officially divorced. If she requests a financial review and finds money flowing to you, she can claim I’m transferring marital assets. Then we’re both screwed.”
“And what if she never signs?”
My hands stilled on the wheel.
“Then I wait for the court to rule.”
But that answer didn’t seem to reassure her.
For the rest of the drive, every time I glanced over, she was already looking at me.
By the time we reached Zinnia’s parents’ house, it was dark.
She wasn’t there.
Her parents said she hadn’t been back at all.
We had no choice but to get a hotel for the night.
In the middle of the night, I got up to use the bathroom. When I came back, Savannah was sitting on the edge of the bed, my phone in her hand.
“What are you doing?”
She set the phone aside and slipped back under the covers.
“Nothing. Go to sleep.”
