Revenge On My Feet Chapter 12
I set my work aside and leaned back in my chair.
She had said that to me plenty of times since the day I first joined WU.
Until now, I’d always chalked it up to nothing more than polite encouragement.
This time, I couldn’t stop myself from asking,
“Yvonne, I really don’t think there’s anything special about me.”
“I make mistakes. I get nervous. You don’t have to praise me all the time.”
Yvonne went quiet for a few seconds before she answered.
“I’m not being polite.”
“I’ve met many people who came from privilege and were arrogant.”
“I’ve also met disabled people who were so trapped by their past injuries that they couldn’t move forward.”
“You’re not like that.”
“When you face a problem, you feel sad. You get hurt.”
“But you haven’t given up on yourself. You keep learning, and you keep moving.”
“That’s why I believe you’ll go far.”
I gripped the phone, and my eyes began to sting.
After a moment, I said quietly,
“Thank you.”
“I’ll keep going.”
…
Two months later, the project was successfully signed.
Over that stretch of time, Desmond had tried to reach me again and again.
He brought the St. Christopher medal he’d gotten for me from a church the year I was hospitalized, asking whether I remembered it.
Night after night he lingered downstairs at Renwick Group, just for the chance to catch sight of me leaving work.
He sent dinners and gifts, routing messages to me through anyone who’d carry them.
I never once answered.
“Thank you.”
“I’ll keep going.”

The last I heard of him came from Mr. Renwick himself.
“That Desmond Bellini who kept harassing you has been fired.”
“You should have told us earlier. The company doesn’t tolerate that kind of behavior.”
“We did a little digging and found some other issues in his background check.”
He paused.
“Also, the person who came to report him was named Renata Lombardi.”
“She came to the company and spoke with us several times. Do you know her?”
